How We Calculate Actual and Predicted Shipment Volume

How We Calculate Actual and Predicted Shipment Volume

The Shipment Volume By Actual and Projected Data Grid dashboards provide a 12-month view of shipment transaction volume by carrier and shipping mode.

It compares:

  • Actual shipments processed

  • Projected shipments for the remainder of the month

  • Total expected monthly volume (Actual + Projected)

  • Licensed shipment limits

This dashboard helps you monitor subscription utilization and forecast shipment volume before renewal. The purpose of this article is to help you understand how the calculations are performed by Pacejet. This may assist in reviewing or further analyzing the predicted volumes.

Subscription Date Example

For this example:

  • Shipping began: 9/1/2025

  • Subscription term: 9/1/2025 through 9/1/2026

  • Today’s date: 2/17/2026

The dashboard evaluates shipment activity within the subscription term and projects forward through the end of each month.

How Actual Shipments Are Calculated

Actual shipment volume is calculated as: The total number of shipment transactions processed during the calendar month.

A shipment transaction represents a completed shipment by carrier. These are grouped by shipping mode such as:

  • Parcel

  • LTL

  • 3PL

Actual values appear in black in the data grid.

These totals are calculated independently for each carrier and each month.

How Ship Days Are Calculated

Ship Days begin on the date of a carrier’s first shipment.

From that first shipment date forward:

  • Every calendar day is counted.

  • Days are counted even if no shipments occurred.

  • Volume on a given day does not impact whether the day is included.

Example:

If a carrier’s first shipment occurred on 9/2/2025, Ship Days begin on 9/2/2025.

If today is 2/17/2026, Ship Days equal the total number of calendar days from 9/2/2025 through 2/17/2026.

This method ensures:

  • Accurate averaging across time.

  • No inflation from counting only active ship days.

  • No underestimation due to low-volume days.

Each carrier has its own Ship Day calculation based on its individual first shipment date.

Why Carrier Start Dates Matter

Not all carriers begin shipping at the same time.

Some carriers:

  • May start mid-subscription.

  • May be added later in the year.

  • May not have activity in earlier months.

The system identifies the first shipment date for each carrier and calculates averages from that point forward.

This prevents:

  • Overstating projections for new carriers.

  • Distorting averages using inactive periods.

How Projected Shipments Are Calculated

Projected shipments estimate total monthly volume based on current shipping trends.

The calculation follows these steps.

  1. Calculate Total Shipments Since Carrier Start Date
    Example:
    Total shipments since 9/2/2025 = 695
    Total Ship Days since 9/2/2025 = 168

  2. Calculate Average Daily Shipments
Average Daily Shipments = Total Shipments ÷ Total Ship Days
    Example: 695 ÷ 168 = 4.1369 shipments per day
Because Ship Days include every calendar day since the first shipment, this average reflects normalized daily activity.

  3. Determine Remaining Days in Current Month
Projected Days Left in Month (including today) = 12

  4. Calculate Projected Shipments for the Remainder of the Month
Projected Shipments = Average Daily Shipments × Remaining Days
    Example: 4.1369 × 12 = 49.6429

  5. Calculate Total Expected Monthly Volume
Total Monthly Shipments = Actual Shipments + Projected Shipments
    Example: 17 actual + 49.6429 projected = 66.6429
Projected values appear in red in the data grid.

Licensed Shipment Limits

Licensed values appear in green in the grid.

These represent the subscription’s allowed shipment volume by mode, such as:

  • Licensed LTL

  • Licensed Parcel

Comparing: Actual + Projected totals against Licensed values helps identify potential overages before renewal.

Reading the Data Grid

The example screenshot below brings together the calculations review in the article.

Color Coding

  • Black = Actual shipments

  • Red = Projected shipments

  • Green = Licensed subscription limits

Each row represents a carrier or shipment grouping.
Each column represents a month within the subscription term.

The Grid Provides

  • Historical shipment activity

  • Current month projections

  • Forecasted usage trends

  • Subscription utilization visibility

Summary

The Shipment Volume By Actual and Projected Data Grid:

  • Tracks shipment transaction counts by carrier and mode

  • Calculates actual monthly shipment totals

  • Determines Ship Days from each carrier’s first shipment date

  • Uses normalized daily averages for projections

  • Forecasts end-of-month totals

  • Compares results against licensed limits

This allows you to monitor subscription usage in real time and plan ahead before renewal.
