Using ProNumber Blocks for Multiple Carriers with WWEX

Descartes Pacejet supports a special WorldWideExpress configuration that lets you ship with multiple LTL carriers while still generating unique Pro Number blocks automatically. Instead of relying on sticker books or waiting for carriers to assign Pro Numbers later, Pacejet can assign Pro Numbers instantly during shipment processing and pass that tracking data directly to connected systems such as your ERP. This approach gives each LTL carrier its own Pro Number blocks, so tracking stays accurate across different carriers that are all accessed through WorldWide Express® (WWEX).

This configuration uses a standard carrier setup under WWEX, combined with a dedicated virtual carrier called WWEProbills that manages Pro Number blocks during shipment processing. The rest of this article explains how this configuration works and highlights the key settings you need to review.

Activation Settings for WorldWide Express

When WorldWide Express (WWEX) integration is first activated, your service representative (or support) will use your credentials and a set of standard defaults with a Pacejet Implementation Script. You will need to provide your ClientID, ClientSecret, and Small Pack Account Number if available. You should also install the WWEX integration in a Pacejet sandbox for testing upgrades and you can choose that setting as part of the activation process. And lastly, you'll want to indicate whether you intend to use the dynamic Pro Num generation feature that is available with the Pacejet WWEX integration during activation.

Dynamic ProNum Generation via the WWEProbills Virtual Carrier

After activation, and if the ProbillSetup option is selected, two carrier records become visible in the Pacejet Administrative area for Pacejet support staff. customer administrators will see only the WWExpressFrt carrier visible in the Setup --> Carrier menu.

Access the Admin carrier area

Pacejet support staff can access carrier administration at Admin --> Location Setup --> Carrier --> Carrier and search for carriers beginning with "wwe".

The WWEProbills virtual carrier will only be visible for Pacejet support staff.
The WWExpressFrt carrier record will be visible to both Pacejet support staff and customer administrators. Customer administrators will access this record under Setup --> Carrier.

Administrators Setup Steps

As part of setting up the ProBills feature, Pacejet support staff will activate a Pro Num generation feature.

  1. Pacejet support staff should click on the WWEProbills carrier and select the LTL Pro tab.

  2. Select the LTL Pro Stored Procedure value of lrm_CarrierProBill_Generator_WWExpressFrt.

  3. Leave the other settings blank.
Because the WWEProbills carrier is used only to support managing ProNum blocks for WorldWide Express, the other settings are not used and can be left blank.

  4. After Pacejet support staff have setup the WWEProBills virtual carrier, they'll click on the WWExpressFrt carrier and set up as usual.
The Pacejet internal view offers a few additional settings that are not available in the customer-facing view. The main Profile settings can be set after conversation with you and your team.

  5. If your setup is automatically generating Classes of Service based on values returned from WorldWide Express, your Pacejet support staff should check each Class of Service to make sure the Alt Code is set to the proper SCAC code for this carrier.
This value is used to lookup ProNum blocks and if not set properly, Pro Numbers will not be allocated during shipping. If a new dynamic class of service is generated in the future, a support ticket should be raised to set this up with your ProNum generation blocks.

Generating Blocks of ProNums for Automatic Process

  1. When you setup Blocks of ProNums under Setup--> Freight Rating --> LTL Pro Setup, the Alt Code setup noted in the previous section must match the Service Class setup during your LTL Pro setup step.

  2. If ProNums are not being generated during shipment processing, Pacejet support staff must verify this part of your setup for accuracy.

The automatic WWEProbills configuration supports a specific set of LTL carrier algorithms for ProNum blocks. In the example shown below, 21 carrier options are available for generating ProNums with the carrier specific business logic.

  3. Make sure that you select the appropriate carrier for your configuration and that the all Classes of Service of that carrier has an Alt Code that matches the Class of Service field indicated in this menu.

  4. Use the appropriate Beginning Sequence, Ending Sequence, Prefix, and Suffix as provided by your carriers when they supply ProNum blocks.

  5. When generating ProNum blocks, you can optionally specify Site and Facility values or leave these values blank.
If values are left blank, shipments with any facility or site will allocate ProNum from the available block.
However, if you specific a Site and Facility, only blocks entered for that combination will be used.

Configuring the WWExpressFrt Carrier Setup

  1. Most of the settings available to the Pacejet support staff are also available for customer-facing administration.

  2. To view these settings: click Setup, and then click Carrier.

  3. Click on the WWExpressFrt record to configure the WorldWide Express carrier record.

In this basic configuration, do NOT setup the LTL PRO Stored Procedure on the LTL Pro tab since the WWEProbills carrier settings are an override in this configuration.

Processing Shipments - Examples

After installing WWEX, configuring the WWEProbills setup, and defining some ProNum blocks, you are ready to process shipments.

We recommend you setup and test this configuration in your Pacejet sandbox first before mirroring the setup to production. It is also recommended that you establish some baseline tests to perform in sandbox with every upgrade, prior to deployment into production.

  1. For testing, first review the status of your current block of ProNums.

  2. Process a shipment with a test carrier within WWExpressFrt matching one of the ProNum blocks you wish to test.
The test shipment shown below is for Site Main in Facility 1, so the expectation is that ProNum will be allocated from the appropriate block highlighted above.

  3. Once your test shipment is completely processed, take note of the ProNum allocated and used with this shipment as highlighted below.

  4. For this test shipment and configuration, we can click on the Bill of Lading (Straight Form) with Packages to review the complete BOL contents.
Use an appropriate Pacejet BOL from your setup. Confirm the ProNum on the Bill of Lading and match it to the confirmation page.

  5. Revisit the ProNum page at Setup --> Freight Rating --> LTL Pro Setup to confirm the allocation of a ProNum.
Notice that in this case, we double-clicked on the ProNum block for the Serivce Class XPO where the Facility was set to 1 and the Site set to Main in our test shipment.
In the ProNum table we can see that our Remaining numbers have been reduced by one.

  6. Drill into the details for that ProNum block and you can also review the Last Used section to see the specific ProNum that matches on our Bill of Lading and the matching Deliver Order number.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are XPO ProNums using the SCAC "CNWY"?
WWEX still refers to XPO SCAC settings as CNWY so this setting must currently be preserved in the carrier setup.
