Pacejet

An Overview of Rule Types

Overview

Pacejet's Rules module provides flexible tools for users to customize how orders are packed, rated, and shipped. Rules can install new features into your Pacejet setup, automate workflows, reconfigure existing features, manipulate data, automate complex decisions and shipping policies, and more.

Each Rule has a specific Rule Type. Rule Types define when a rule is triggered within a shipment's lifecycle. There are several different types of rules that can be set.

Knowing the order in which you should place rules is important for them to complete their given tasks successfully.

The five standard rules are listed below:

  • Post Import

  • Post Pack

  • Pre Ship

  • Post Ship

  • Custom Rate Rule

Keep in mind that sometimes Rules can have more than one Rule Type — this depends on the Rule and the task it is programmed to complete. You can read more about each rule here: An Overview of Rule Types.

Definitions and Use Cases for Rule Types

Use Case

Post Import

Post Import rules are triggered automatically upon shipment data being imported from the ERP. Any post import rule will be placed at the beginning of a shipment's lifecycle.

Use Case: Replace Long Phone Number for Amazon Orders

Immediately after a long phone number from the Ship To Phone Number field is imported from the ERP, this rule replaces it with an alternate phone number.

Post Pack

This rule is executed when Save is clicked in the toolbar. Most Post Pack rules are executed toward the end of the shipment's lifecycle.

Use Case: Set Declared Value

Kallihan Sprockets needs to set the declared value of each shipment to reflect the value of the contents. Once packing is completed and the save button is clicked the Set Declared Value rule uses the total price of all the units in the shipment to determine the declared value.

Pre Ship

This rule is executed when the Ship button is clicked. Preship rules are placed at the end of the shipment's lifecycle.

Use Case: Prevent Intl Shipment with no ITN number

When the Ship button is clicked, the system looks at the Ship To Address and the value of the shipment. If the shipment needs to go through customs, is valued at more than $2500, and has no ITN number, an error appears.

Post Ship Rule

This rule is executed after the Ship button is clicked and the transaction is accepted by the carrier. Post Ship rules are placed at the end of the shipment's lifecycle.

Use Case: Allocate Shipping Price/Cost for Consolidation

This rule looks at either the weight or the cost and price of the shipment and distributes it across all containers in the shipment on a percentage basis.

Custom Rate Rule

Custom Rate Rules help you influence the price of a shipment. This rule is triggered when clicking the gear (mceclip0.png) in the toolbar to rate a shipment. Below are a few examples of how you can use custom rate rules.

    • Adding a fixed amount to the shipping price

    • Adding a handling charge for a specific product

    • Displaying the publicly listed price for shipping cost

Use Case: Shipping Price To Reflect List Cost

Kallihan Sprockets wants to reflect the list cost of shipping on their invoices so, when they click the gear to rate a shipment, the price matches what the customer sees if they look up the shipping cost outside of the Pacejet environment (Example: If they were to look up the shipping price on the UPS website).

Additional Rule Types Used When Custom Rules are Developed

Additionally, there are five more rule types that are generally not used as standard rules. These are typically used when custom rules are developed.

These additional rule types are listed below:

  • Load Rule

  • Post-Consolidation Rule

  • Post-Void Rule

  • Pre-Consolidation Rule

  • Pre-Import Rule
