FedEx One Rate Handling in the Pacejet Connector
Overview
There are important changes to how FedEx One Rate pricing is handled in the connector, FedEx Freight connector, used by Descartes Pacejet™. These changes are driven by updates to FedEx APIs and affect how One Rate eligibility is determined, displayed, and applied during label creation.
This article explains what FedEx One Rate is, what changed in the connector, and how Pacejet ensures the correct pricing is applied.
What is FedEx One Rate?
FedEx One Rate is a special pricing program offered by FedEx for express services on single-package shipments.
A few key points to keep in mind:
One Rate pricing applies only to FedEx express services.
It does not apply to ground shipments.
It does not apply to multi-package shipments.
Traditionally, One Rate pricing depended on selecting a specific FedEx Packaging Type, such as Medium Box or Large Box, when rating and shipping.
What Changed in the Pacejet Connector?
The Pacejet connector uses FedEx’s Comprehensive Rate and Transit Time API. This API changes how One Rate eligibility is determined.
With this API:
One Rate pricing no longer requires explicitly selecting a FedEx Packaging Type during rating.
FedEx determines eligibility automatically based on package dimensions.
The API evaluates whether the shipment qualifies for One Rate pricing alongside all other applicable FedEx services.
This means Pacejet relies on FedEx’s volumetric logic rather than a manually selected packaging type during the rate request.
How FedEx Determines One Rate Eligibility
FedEx describes the behavior of the API as follows:
The Comprehensive Rate and Transit Time API performs a volumetric calculation using the package dimensions provided. Based on that volume, FedEx maps the shipment to the closest standard FedEx package type, such as Medium Box or Large Box. If the shipment qualifies, FedEx returns One Rate pricing along with standard rate quotes for other eligible services.
FedEx provides a reference chart that shows how package volume is converted into the corresponding FedEx Packaging Type.
What You Will See in Pacejet
When One Rate pricing is applied:
The Show Trace will include text indicating that FedEx applied One Rate pricing.
The Show Trace will also display the FedEx Packaging Type that FedEx selected based on the package dimensions.
This gives you transparency into how the rate was calculated and why One Rate pricing was used.
Disable One Rate Display
To disable OneRate entirely for all locations, all shipments, ask a Pacejet representative to set the FedEx Rate Display Option Application Setting can be set to SELECTED_RATES_EXCLUDING_F1R.
To disable OneRate for a Facility, add this value to the FedEx Carrier Setting as described in the article: How to Use Carrier Settings with FedEx.
How Labels are Handled
To ensure consistency between rating and shipping:
Pacejet sends the FedEx Packaging Type selected by FedEx in the rate response back to FedEx during label creation.
This ensures that FedEx applies the same One Rate pricing to the shipment when the label is generated.
As a result, the rate you see during rating aligns with the final label cost.
Key Takeaways
FedEx One Rate still applies only to express, single-package shipments.
The Pacejet connector no longer requires manually selecting a FedEx Packaging Type to receive One Rate pricing.
FedEx determines eligibility using package dimensions and volumetric calculations.
Pacejet surfaces this information in the Show Trace and ensures it is applied consistently during label creation.
