UPS Service Names: Canada and US

Overview

Pacejet users may notice that UPS class of service names can sometimes differ depending on the country of origin and destination. Generally speaking this is controlled by the UPS account registered for use with your shipping operations and the origin and destination addresses. However, there are several service classes where a dynamic branding / naming switch in Pacejet shows a different class of service on-screen versus what is stored and managed in the system. Generally, this happens when multiple UPS classes of service are managed by UPS internally with the same UPS internal service codes. This article helps clarify what users should expect from UPS’s branded services based on the shipment origin and destination.

UPS Service Codes

UPS uses internal service codes (e.g. 03) in their IT systems to transact and manage shipping operations; these codes determine factors like pricing, transit-time, and other terms of delivery. Most shippers are more familiar with the service names (e.g. UPS Ground) and the implied terms of service for each of these branded names. However, UPS service codes are often NOT uniquely tied to service names, especially when it comes to differences in the UPS services available for domestic shipping (e.g. in the US) versus export shipping (e.g. US to CA). The UPS use of shared service codes can give rise to situations where a service name displayed on the Pacejet screen is different that than the service name stored in the Pacejet database and available for selection in manual rating and shipping.

The table below includes some of the most common UPS services used by most shippers, providing a map of the UPS Service Code to the UPS Service Name and indicating the corresponding Origin, Destination, and UPS Service Name usage scenario. Also note that the table provides a reference to the Carrier and Class of service name that will be displayed in Pacejet, stored in the Pacejet database, and made available for selection in the Pacejet UI. The "Dynamic branding display, no select/save" message is used to indicate share UPS Service Codes where the Pacejet system may display the UPS Service Name appropriate to the Origin / Destination combination while internally managing only one Carrier - Service name in Pacejet.

Shared Service Codes for Different UPS Service Names

As covered at the beginning of this article, UPS uses some shared service codes for different combinations of origins and destinations. The shared service codes in UPS can give rise to display of one class of service name in the Pacejet software, while another name is stored and managed in the Pacejet database. For example, the screenshot below highlights a scenario where a CA-to-CA shipment (e.g. domestic in Canada) is displaying the service name "UPS Express" while the field value stored in Pacejet is UPS Next Day Air. Because UPS considers both of these service names to be the same service code (e.g. see 01 in the table above), Pacejet will use only one of the service names to refer to and use the UPS service.

Key Takeaways for Pacejet Users

  • Expect dynamic branding changes: For example, using UPS Next Day Air in a shipment will show UPS Express for appropriate from/to shipments.

  • Open rating: Will always display the UPS branded services to users based on the origin and destination countries.

  • ERP integrations: The carrier cross reference value used in ERP integrations only provides a single value for shared service classes.
