How to use Freight Density

Overview

Freight Density videos are available within Pacejet, or by following the steps below.

How Freight Density is Calculated

Freight Density is calculated using the dimensions (LxWxH) and the weight of the pallet.

Example:

      • Calculate cubic inches: (L x W x H) 40x40x48 = 76,800

      • Convert cubic inches to feet: 76,800/1,728 = 44.44

      • Divide the weight by the cubic feet: 560/44.44 = 12.6

Density ranges determine the applicable NMFC subcode and associated Rate Class.

Selecting NMFC Based on Freight Density

  1. From the main menu, click Setup, Freight Rating, and then Freight Density.

  2. Using the first and second columns, find your Freight Density.
Using the example above, 12.6 falls between 12 and 15; therefore, the Sub Code is 08, and the Rate Class is 85.

When enabled, Freight Density populates the Classification on the pallet after weights and dimensions have been entered.

Configuring Freight Density

Follow the steps below to set up Freight Density:

  1. From the main menu, click Lists, and then click Classification.
Freight Density uses the Classification list.

  2. Enter 13 entries with the same product code, applicable subcode (01 to 13), and Rate Class.
It is ok to have additional product codes in the Classification List for manual use.
On the Freight Density screen, only the Product Codes with 13 entries in the Classification List are in the drop-down list.

  3. From the main menu, click Setup, Freight Rating, and then Freight Density.

  4. Slide the Enable option to the right to turn the feature on.

  5. From the Product Code drop-down list, select your Product Code, and the Rate Class will be populated.

  6. In the Density Less Than column, put your cursor in the first row. As you populate this column, the Density From column will auto-populate.

  7. Use your tab key to move down the Density Less Than column until it is fully populated.

  8. At the top of the screen, put a check mark by one or both of the following options:

    • Calculate Density when transaction is sent to Pacejet

    • Calculate Density when Save or Ship is selected.
If your system performs packing and will pass pallets with their weights and dimensions, Density can be calculated upon import with information passed by your system. If you perform packing in Pacejet shipping, Density will need to be completed later in the process after weights and dimensions have been entered.

  9. Click Save.
