Purpose
This article documents an internal configuration for FedEx international return shipments when the customer needs to select the OTHER customs option and provide shipment-specific descriptive text.
This configuration is not customer-facing. The setup steps described below are only accessible to Pacejet resources and must be configured on the customer’s behalf.
When to use this configuration
FedEx supports several predefined customs options for global returns, including COURTESY_RETURN_LABEL, EXHIBITION_TRADE_SHOW, FAULTY_ITEM, FOLLOWING_REPAIR, FOR_REPAIR, ITEM_FOR_LOAN, OTHER, REJECTED, REPLACEMENT, and TRIAL.
Use the configuration in this article when:
The customer cannot use one predefined customs option for every applicable return shipment.
The appropriate customs reason may vary by shipment.
The customer needs to use the FedEx
OTHERcustoms option.Users need to enter the description associated with
OTHERwhen processing an individual shipment.
FedEx requires a description when the customs option Type is OTHER.
How the configuration works
The configuration combines two Pacejet elements:
A custom shipment service sets the FedEx customs option to
OTHER.A shipment-level Message allows the user to supply the descriptive text required for that option.
Once configured, the user selects the custom shipment service in Rate & Ship and enters the appropriate description for that specific return shipment.
Pacejet resource configuration
These configuration steps must be completed by a Pacejet resource. Customers do not have access to the configuration described in this section.
1. Create the custom shipment service
Create a shipment service that sets the default FedEx return customs option to OTHER.
Example configuration:
Code: RETURN_SHIPMENT_OTHER
Description: FedEx Return Other Customs Option
Display Section: FedEx
Is Active: Selected
The purpose of this shipment service is to set the return shipment’s customs option to OTHER.
2. Define the custom data value for the Message
Create the custom data value that will allow the shipment-specific description to be supplied through a Message.
Configure the data value as follows:
Table Name: Message
Column Name: Type
Value: Return_CustomsOptions_Description
The Description field can contain any appropriate internal description.
Example:
Description: Description for Return Shipment Customs Option
Customer workflow in Rate & Ship
After a Pacejet resource completes the configuration, the customer can provide the required OTHER description on individual shipments.
1. Select the custom shipment service
On the Rate & Ship page, locate the FedEx section under Shipment Services and select:
FedEx Return Other Customs Option
Selecting this service identifies the return customs option as OTHER.
2. Enter the customs description
Under Messages / Notification, select:
Description for Return Shipment Customs Option
Enter the appropriate description for the shipment in the message text field.
The text entered here supplies the additional description required when the FedEx customs option is OTHER.
3. Complete the shipment
Continue the normal rating and processing workflow after entering the appropriate customs description.
Important considerations
This is a qualified workaround rather than a streamlined standard configuration. It requires internal setup by a Pacejet resource before the customer can use it.
The configuration specifically combines a shipment service that sets the customs option to OTHER with a per-shipment Message that supplies the required descriptive text.
Customers should determine the appropriate customs reason and description for their shipment. This article documents the Pacejet configuration and workflow only and does not provide guidance on which customs reason a customer should select.
Troubleshooting
The customer cannot find the FedEx Return Other Customs Option service
Confirm that the custom shipment service has been created, is active, and is available in the FedEx display section.
The description option does not appear under Messages / Notification
Confirm that the custom data value has been defined with the following values:
Table Name: Message
Column Name: Type
Value: Return_CustomsOptions_Description
FedEx rejects the OTHER customs option
Confirm that the user selected the custom shipment service and supplied text through the configured Message. FedEx requires a description when the customs option Type is OTHER.
If both values are present and the shipment still fails, continue troubleshooting through the normal Pacejet support or development process.
