Using Declared Value

Declared Value Overview

Declared Value is the monetary value provided to a carrier for a shipment or package. Depending on the carrier and shipment type, Declared Value may be used for:

  • Customs valuation on international shipments

  • Liability coverage calculations

  • Carrier-required shipment documentation

  • Regulatory or reporting purposes

Pacejet supports Declared Value across multiple carriers and shipping scenarios. The specific use of Declared Value depends on the carrier's requirements and services.

Populating Declared Value

Users can manually enter Declared Value amounts when processing shipments.

Many customers also configure ERP business rules or shipment automation to populate Declared Value automatically. Pacejet commonly defaults the Declared Value based on the total value of products assigned to a package.

A Shipment Rule is available within Pacejet that calculates Declared Value using the following formula:

Quantity × Item Price

The calculated values for all products assigned to a package are then summed to determine the package's Declared Value.

Carrier Use of Declared Value

Carriers may use Declared Value differently.

International Shipping

For many international shipments, Declared Value is used to establish the customs value of goods being exported or imported. This value may be transmitted to customs authorities and included on commercial invoices or other shipping documents.

Liability Coverage

Some carriers use Declared Value as part of their liability coverage process. In these cases, the Declared Value may be used to determine the maximum carrier liability associated with a shipment, subject to the carrier's terms and conditions.

Refer to your carrier's documentation for details regarding how liability coverage is calculated and applied.

Declared Value and Insurance

Declared Value and Insurance are separate shipment attributes within Pacejet.

Depending on carrier configuration and carrier capabilities, a shipment may use:

  • Declared Value only

  • Insurance only

  • Both Declared Value and Insurance

  • Neither Declared Value nor Insurance

Carrier-specific validation messages may occur when one value is provided without the other.

FedEx 26.4 and Later

Beginning with FedEx connector version 26.4, FedEx liability coverage is processed using the Declared Value field.

For FedEx shipments:

  • The Carrier Insurance Shipment Service is no longer used.

  • The Insurance field should remain blank.

  • Liability coverage information is transmitted using Declared Value.

  • Rating and shipment processing continue normally using the Declared Value submitted to FedEx.

For additional information, see: FedEx® Declared Value in Pacejet – What It Is and How It Affects Your Rates.

UPS Configurations

Some UPS configurations may use both Declared Value and Insurance. For example, processing a UPS shipment with a Declared Value but without Insurance may generate a carrier message indicating that the Declared Value was not transmitted because Insurance was not selected.

Customers who rate shop between FedEx and UPS should review carrier-specific configuration guidance to ensure liability coverage is handled consistently between carriers.
