How To Open .csv Files Without Altering Data

Overview

Pacejet employs the use of .csv (comma separated value) files for Bulk Importing/Exporting and Freight Audit Imports, and for certain use cases in User Accounts.

Opening .csv files in programs like Microsoft Excel can change how the data is structured, or, worse, corrupt the file. This article discusses some helpful tips for opening .csv files for editing.

Before Opening Your .csv File

Before you open a .csv file, consider taking these steps.

  • Make a backup copy of your .csv file before importing it.

  • Understand how your program of choice may affect .csv files.

  • Consider using a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++.

How To Open .csv Files In Excel Safely

The directions below show you how to import files in Excel 2005. Other versions of Excel will likely have different directions. But the premise is the same:

  • Do not open it with File, Open. Instead Import the document.

  • Do not save normally. Instead save it as a csv file.

  1. Open a new Excel sheet, select the Data tab, then click From Text/CSV .

  2. Browse to the desired .csv file and select Import.

  3. Select the Writing System that was used in the original .csv file. Many times, the correct writing system is selected by default.
