TROUBLESHOOTING: Label Connector Printing Speed Issues

Overview

Pacejet cannot provide direct support for BarTender. The following suggestions are based on Pacejet's experiences. It is recommended that you contact your BarTender support provider for in-depth assistance.

Pacejet Label Connector Printing Speed Issues

Many factors influence how long it takes to print labels. These factors include the following:

  • BarTender label design and logic

  • Communication between Windows and the printer

  • Network speed

  • Available workstation memory

  • BarTender Integration Configuration settings
(Example: “Print Document” >> “Prompt for data input” selection being used.)

This article provides basic steps to help isolate common causes of slow printing when using the Pacejet Label Connector to print from BarTender.

Pacejet .csv File Generation Speed Test

The following steps can help you determine the time that it takes the Pacejet Label Connector and Print Connector to generate and deliver the .csv files:

  1. Temporarily stop the BarTender Integration service

  2. Verify that the Pacejet Label Connector service is running

  3. On the BarTender workstation, navigate to C:\PJBartender\DataFile and keep this window visible

  4. In Pacejet, process an order:

    • For Multi-Level Packing:

      • Pack your container(s) using the Multi-Level Pack icon on the Rate and Ship page.

    • For Orders Not Being Multi-Level packed:

      • Complete and ship the order in Pacejet

  5. Start a timer as you complete one of the steps above. (The .CSV is created at this point)

  6. In Windows Explorer, return to C:\PJBartender\DataFile and stop your timer when the .csv files appear.
Note the duration: In a default configuration, we expect to see the .csv populating the folder in 5-10 seconds.

BarTender Print Generation Speed Test

Use these steps to determine how long it takes BarTender to send a print job to the label printer :

  1. In Windows, open the printer queue for the printer that will generate labels, then pause that printer.

  2. Restart the BarTender Integration service and start your timer

  3. When the print jobs appear in the paused printer, stop your timer and note the duration.

  4. Remove the printer from its paused state and start your timer again.

  5. Stop your timer when the label is generated from the printer, and note the duration.

Possible Resolutions To Slow BarTender Printing

  • BarTender temporarily stores printing data to memory. Adding memory may improve speed-related issues. Contact your BarTender support provider for suggested memory configurations.

  • Remove unused DataBase Fields from the .btw label files that are in use. Pacejet provides data mappings with over 250 fields. Removing the unused fields reduces the amount of memory used and can improve the label printing process.

  • For Advanced BarTender Users Only: As with the .btw label files, remove any unused mapped database fields from the .btin file for each integration.

Removing required database fields can results in label generation issues.
