UPS® End of Day in Pacejet

UPS End of Day Overview

UPS offers two different ways to process shipping data, and whether you need to run the End of Day (EOD) process depends on which solution you use. For UPS-Ready solutions like Descartes Pacejet, UPS does not allow or support an End of Day process. This article explains the difference between UPS WorldShip® and UPS Ready/API solutions like Pacejet.

WorldShip vs. UPS Ready (API) Solutions

  • UPS WorldShip (Client Software): Requires you to run the End of Day (EOD) process to transmit Package Level Detail (PLD) to UPS and print driver paperwork. UPS explains: "You must run the End of Day process. This process transmits your shipment data to UPS and prints the reports required by your UPS driver."

  • UPS Ready / API Solutions (like Pacejet): When you ship through a UPS Ready partner, PLD is automatically transmitted to UPS at the time each label is created. This means that UPS does not allow, support, or require any separate End of Day step and there is no paper EOD form to hand to drivers. Instead, each label already contains the PLD record. UPS’s developer documentation confirms this difference by describing Host Manifest and API-based PLD transmissions, which are electronic by design.

Package and Bow-Tie

When a UPS label shows the small package and bow-tie icon, it indicates that:

  • The package’s PLD has already been transmitted to UPS.

  • The package is considered “pre-scanned” and “pre-paid.”

  • No End of Day report is allowed, supported, or required for drivers.
This is the same symbol you’ll see on labels created through UPS Ready/API systems like Pacejet.

Practical Guidance for Shippers

  • If you use Pacejet (UPS Ready): You do not run any End of Day process, UPS does not allow, support, or require it. Your shipments are already transmitted to UPS when the labels are created. Simply hand the packages to the driver; your labels carry the PLD data.

  • If you use UPS WorldShip: You must run the End of Day process daily. Without it, your PLD is not sent to UPS, and your driver will not receive the required paperwork.

Summary

  • UPS WorldShip = EOD required.

  • UPS Ready/API solutions (like Pacejet) = EOD not required.
