Choosing the Right 3PL Partner: A Guide to Descartes Pacejet's Integrated Logistics Network

Overview

One of the reasons Descartes Pacejet customers consolidate their shipping on the platform is the depth and breadth of its built-in carrier network. Beyond the parcel and direct LTL carriers Pacejet integrates, the platform connects shippers to a wide ecosystem of third-party logistics providers (3PLs), companies that bring negotiated carrier rates, managed services, technology, and consultative expertise that most shippers can't replicate on their own.

This article profiles the 3PLs and freight partners currently integrated to Pacejet so you can quickly compare your options when deciding who should move your less-than-truckload (LTL) freight.

Terminology

In day-to-day conversation, "3PL" gets used loosely. For accuracy, when comparing the providers below, it helps to keep three categories in mind:

  • Non-asset-based 3PLs / freight brokers / managed transportation providers. These companies don't own trucks; they leverage carrier networks, technology, and analytics to source capacity, negotiate rates, and manage shipping for shippers. The majority of partners in Pacejet's 3PL category fit here. Examples on this list: C.H. Robinson, BlueGrace, AFS, Priority1, Worldwide Express, Unishippers, GlobalTranz, KDL, Jarrett, Evans, Transportation Insight, Source Alliance, GLB Solutions, Tech Logistics, ExFreight, UTS, Freightquote, and Ascent.

  • Asset-based regional LTL and parcel carriers. These companies own and operate their own equipment within a defined region. They are technically carriers rather than 3PLs, but Pacejet integrates them so shippers can rate-shop and book directly. Examples on this list: GLS Freight (Western US LTL/parcel) and ADL (Southeast US final mile/parcel with LTL capability).

  • Specialty providers. Final-mile, courier, or international-focused providers that complement the LTL category. Examples on this list:TForce Logistics (final-mile, same-day/next-day) and Armour (Atlantic Canada carrier with a 3PL division) fit here.

  • Globally integrated, asset-based 3PL. Mainfreight is the only provider on this list operating its own owned-and-controlled global network — international forwarding and 3PL warehousing combined with an in-house, asset-based LTL motor carrier in North America. It bridges the categories above.

Knowing which category a provider sits in is the single biggest factor in picking the right partner: a national non-asset-based 3PL gives you broad capacity and rate-shopping leverage, while an asset-based regional carrier typically gives you tighter service control and faster transit in their footprint.

One more important note before the profiles: three of the names on this list, Worldwide Express (WWEX), GlobalTranz, and Unishippers, are sister brands under the same parent company, WWEX Group. They go to market separately (direct, agent, and franchise channels respectively) but share carrier relationships and the SpeedShip technology platform. Likewise, Freightquote is owned by C.H. Robinson and is its self-service brand for small and mid-size shippers.

The GLS Freight division offers LTL service across the same footprint, and GLS Solutions provides brokerage and dedicated solutions. The company is an asset-based regional carrier rather than a non-asset 3PL.

Faster, often next-day regional LTL and parcel transit times in the West by avoiding the national-carrier hub-and-spoke model, with the global reach of GLS Group's European network for international flows.

Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Orrville, Ohio, Jarrett is a family-owned 3PL with offices in Cleveland, Hickory NC, and Los Angeles plus warehousing in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Its LTL service is part of a broader portfolio that includes truckload, parcel, freight brokerage, audit and payment, warehousing, and managed transportation, all backed by its proprietary TMS and Applied Intelligence approach.

Mainfreight®

https://www.mainfreight.com/

Mainfreight is a New Zealand–headquartered global logistics company founded in 1978, with roughly $2.4 billion in revenue, 8,000 team members, 260-plus branches, and operations in 24 countries. The Mainfreight Americas network alone spans 79 branches across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Chile. In April 2023, Mainfreight USA obtained its Motor Carrier Authority, formally shifting from freight forwarder/broker classification to an asset-based LTL motor carrier model, running its own owner-driver fleet with day-definite service across 32 major regions in North America. The company also offers global ocean and air forwarding, customs brokerage, and 3PL warehousing (FDA-registered, with several SQF-certified facilities for food-grade fulfillment).

A globally integrated, owned-and-controlled network paired with an in-house LTL fleet, meaning customers deal directly with the carrier on liability, safety, and insurance rather than through a broker. The strongest fit for shippers with significant Asia-Pacific or Australasia flows who want one provider to manage international transport, warehousing, and domestic LTL on a single network.

Priority1

https://www.priority1.com/

Founded in 1995, Priority1 is a Little Rock Arkansas–based, non-asset-based 3PL that has scaled into one of the larger privately held LTL-focused providers in the U.S. Its LTL service combines national, regional, and micro-regional carriers managed through the proprietary Cabo TMS, with additional services including white-glove/final-mile, project, and roadshow shipping.

Debt-free and privately owned with no outside investors, Priority1 emphasizes a stable, technology-forward LTL platform with a wide carrier mix. A good fit for shippers wanting a true LTL specialist with deep enterprise LTL bidding capability.

Source Alliance Network

https://sourcealliance.net/

Source Alliance Network is a Chicago-based 3PL with a multi-modal portfolio (parcel, LTL, volume LTL, FTL, white-glove, air, ocean) reaching the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and beyond. Its ONESOURCE TMS connects via API to roughly 10,000 carriers and supports private-label deployment and ERP integration. The company also runs a recognized 3PL Summit and freight-management training programs.

Aggressive use of volume aggregation discounts, a deep healthcare/life-science/food-manufacturing vertical, and a flexible TMS that can be private-labeled, useful for distributors who want to extend a shipping experience to their own customers.

A technology-driven 3PL with more than 40 years of industry experience (since 1983), Tech Logistics provides freight forwarding, warehousing, and distribution across LTL, FTL, parcel, and small-package modes, paired with a complimentary TMS, AI-driven invoice audit, and weekly carrier manifest reporting.

Long industry tenure and a no-fee TMS with audit built in. The company claims 10–25% annual transportation cost savings for customers. A good fit for cost-conscious shippers wanting a single 3PL relationship that includes audit and consolidated payables.

TForce Logistics®

https://www.tforcelogistics.com/

It specializes in same-day and next-day final-mile delivery for e-commerce, medical, financial, and B2B shippers, a complement to the LTL carriers in this list rather than a direct LTL substitute.

TFI's LTL line-haul carrier is the separately branded TForce Freight.

North America's leading footprint for same-day and time-critical final-mile delivery, with TForce Medical Logistics for healthcare. Best fit for shippers whose end-customer experience depends on the last leg.

Transportation Insight

https://www.transportationinsight.com/

Transportation Insight (TI), based in Hickory, NC and founded in 2000, is the Enterprise Logistics arm of TI Holdco. It is regularly ranked among the top domestic transportation managers by Armstrong & Associates and operates alongside its sister brokerage Nolan Transportation Group (NTG). LTL service is delivered through a "Co-Managed Logistics" model with multi-modal carrier procurement, freight bill audit and payment, and the Beon digital logistics platform.

A combination of consultative, enterprise-grade managed transportation with the brokerage scale of NTG. Particularly strong for manufacturers, retailers, and distributors with complex multi-modal and parcel programs needing both strategy and execution.

Unishippers® (WWEX Group)

https://www.unishippers.com/

Unishippers is the small-business-focused brand of WWEX Group, going to market through 200-plus franchise owners across the U.S. It packages LTL freight (75+ LTL carriers), truckload, and small package shipping (as part of the largest non-retail UPS Authorized Reseller in the country) for SMBs that wouldn't typically have negotiated freight rates.

Big-shipper buying power packaged with small-business attention through a local franchise owner. The right fit for SMBs that want a single relationship for parcel and LTL with personalized account management.

UTS (Universal Traffic Service)

https://www.utsnet.com/

UTS, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a privately held, full-service 3PL that emphasizes long-term relationships (40% of clients have been with UTS for a decade or more). LTL service is delivered through a managed-transportation model that bundles a no-fee TMS, dedicated account, audit, claims, and traffic specialists, and the company recovered $5.3M in carrier overcharges for clients in a recent year.

Hands-on, full-service traffic management for shippers that want a true outsourced traffic department rather than a self-service portal. Especially valuable for mid-market manufacturers and distributors that ship LTL across multiple locations.

Worldwide Express® / WWEX (WWEX Group)

https://wwex.com/

Worldwide Express, headquartered in Dallas, is the direct-sales flagship brand of WWEX Group, the second largest privately held 3PL in the U.S. with nearly $5 billion in systemwide revenue across Worldwide Express, GlobalTranz, and Unishippers. LTL is delivered through 75+ regional and national LTL carriers, paired with parcel via the largest non-retail UPS reseller relationship in the country, all on the SpeedShip TMS.

Unique combination of UPS parcel resale economics with a deep LTL carrier portfolio, all under one roof. Strong choice for shippers who want both parcel and LTL with one provider, one platform, and one account team, particularly mid-market and growing enterprise shippers.

How to choose

When deciding among these partners inside Pacejet, the practical questions worth asking are:

  • Do you need national LTL scale, regional service density, or both? National non-asset 3PLs (C.H. Robinson, BlueGrace, AFS, WWEX Group brands, Priority1, KDL, Jarrett, Transportation Insight, Evans, UTS) give you breadth. Regional asset-based carriers (GLS Freight, Armour, ADL) typically give you tighter service in their footprint.

  • How much do you want to outsource? Managed transportation specialists (AFS, Transportation Insight, KDL, Evans, Jarrett, UTS) act as an extension of your team. Self-service brokers (Freightquote, ExFreight) let you run shipping in-house with the rates and tools.

  • What's your geography? Cross-border Canadian flows favor Armour. Western U.S. parcel + LTL favors GLS. Southeast final-mile favors ADL. International + domestic favors C.H. Robinson, AFS, ExFreight, and Ascent — and Mainfreight is the standout for Asia-Pacific / Australasia flows paired with North American LTL on one owned network.

  • What's the size of the shipper relationship? SMB-focused (Unishippers, Freightquote, ExFreight) versus mid-market and enterprise (most of the rest) versus time-critical specialists (Ascent, TForce Logistics).

Because Pacejet rate-shops across all of these providers in a single workbench, many shippers ultimately maintain accounts with two or three complementary partners, typically a national 3PL for breadth, a regional asset-based carrier for service density, and a specialist for any unique needs (e.g., final-mile, international, white-glove). The platform's job is to make that mix easy to operate; this guide is meant to make it easier to decide.
