Overview
Pacejet supports a contents-detail packing process to capture and record items shipping in specific boxes, pallets, or other containers. The process is similar to a grocery store checkout.
This article covers Scan and Pack Essentials and Scan and Pack Enterprise. For information about Scan and Pack, refer to Scan and Pack. For information about Quick Ship, refer to Quick Ship.
Options
Pacejet provides two license-controlled options to choose from: Scan and Pack Essentials and Scan and Pack Enterprise. Both options allow you to quickly scan each item as it is packed into a container, validate that the item is part of the original order, and record the item as being shipped in the specific container for automated packing lists and easier export paperwork.
Both Scan and Pack Essentials and Scan and Pack Enterprise allow for adding multiple empty containers. There are situations where empty containers are needed, such as a multi-box item, but they are sold in a quantity of one. To account for this, Scan and Pack Essentials and Scan and Pack Enterprise allow for adding empty containers.
Scan and Pack Essentials |
Scan and Pack Enterprise |
Scan and Pack Essentials does not include the ability to pack containers in/on containers Example: No placing containers on pallets. |
Scan and Pack Enterprise was previously known as Multi-Level Packing (MLP). |
For details about items replicated during cloning, refer to Scan and Pack Essentials Items Replicated (below). |
For details about items replicated during cloning, refer to Scan and Pack Enterprise (below). |
Key Features
A core feature of Pacejet Scan and Pack is the integration with ERP fulfillment data so that scanning processes are validating physical packing activities with order data in your ERP system. A scale is used to determine the weight.
Interface and Sounds
When the system first displays the scanning screen, an area on the left-hand side of the screen labeled Upacked Items lists all the items in the current order. The right-hand side of the screen will start listing containers and items as items are scanned and packed into shipping containers.
The user interface is designed to operate very quickly and provide both audio and visual feedback during packing. As items are scanned into boxes or onto pallets, audible confirmation and error sounds immediately inform you of incorrect items or other mistakes. Highly visible green (Go) and red (Stop) screen visuals with on-screen messages help you quickly react to and resolve error conditions while so that you can keep moving efficiently. If you receive the red screen, the system highlights the currently scanned-in value so that you scan a different value to correct the problem.
The large, uncluttered layout of the screen and multiple feedback methods mean you can run tethered or blue-tooth scanners. In other words, you do not have constantly view the screen as items are verified and recorded.

Scanning Items
When you activate the scan and pack function, the system displays a new screen, overlaying the current Rate and Ship display, and the system enters packing-mode. From packing-mode, you can start scanning boxes, items, and other details, and return to the rate and ship screen when you are finished packing. In setup, you may select to have speakers available on the shipping workstation PC so that audio confirmation sounds can be heard during the packing process. This is optional but will help you move quickly without the need to look at the workstation screen to confirm validation of items.
From the Shipping Workbench, find your order.
Click the View Shipment on Rate & Ship Page button (
).
In the Package Information section, click the Package Information title bar to expand that section.
-
Do one of the following:
Click the Scan and Pack icon (
), and then go to step 5.
Note: This is either Scan and Pack Essentials or Scan and Pack Enterprise, depending on what you have installed.Scan the E or M shortcut code, and then go to step 5.
Note: The list of barcode shortcuts is available on the scanning screen.
Scan a box type. (You can also create boxes with dimensions on-the-fly. (Refer to Creating Your Own Containers (Self Pack)) (Below)
You also have the option to click the Scan Container drop-down list and select a container.-
Scan items into the container.
Notes:As valid items are scanned, the screen background displays a green color and a positive confirmation tone sounds.
If you have more than one of the same item, refer to the Scanning More Than One of the Same Item section below.
When scanning a multi-pack scan code tht is Lot-Tracked, all items in the same multi-pack need to be from the same Lot Number. If a quantity is specified before an item is scanned, all the items entered are assumed to be the same Lot number. If a scale is configured, the system reads the scale value when entering or scanning the container. If no scale is configured, the system defaults to using the calculated weight.
If the product uses a Lot Number or Serial Number, Pacejet displays a Product Attributes window.
-
If the product does not have a Lot Number or Serial Number, go to step 8.
Enter or scan the Lot Number or Serial Number.
-
Click OK.
Notes:For more information on configuring Lot Numbers, refer to Lot Numbers: Configuring Lot Numbers and Running the Lot Number Capture and Serial Number Bulk Export Report.
Lot Numbers can be blank.
For more information about scanning multiple items, refer to Scanning More Than One of the Same Item below.
Repeat steps 5-7 or 6 and 7 until all items are scanned.
After all items are scanned into all shipping containers, and all weights are captured, scan the FINISH AND CLOSE bar code or click Done.
The main scanning screen closes, and the Package Information area will update to show the container list. Other packing functions in this area or the scan and pack area can be used to edit any details if necessary.
Scanning More Than One of the Same Item
When you have several identical items to scan, you can scan a single ENTER QUANTITY code rather than scanning the UPC Code multiple times for each individual item.
If you plan to scan more than one of a particular item, follow the steps below:
Scan the ENTER QUANTITY bar code.
The Barcode Shortcuts link is located on the Scanning screen.Enter the quantity of items.
IMPORTANT! Currently, you cannot combine entering quantity with multi-packed lot-tracked items, and you cannot scan multiple quantities of a single Lot Number.Click OK.
The entered quantity of items (9 in this example) is transferred to the container.Scan the item. (Refer to Scanning Items (above)).
Creating Your Own Containers (Self Pack)
Scan and pack give you the ability to create your own containers based on the dimensions of the items. When this flag is set and the item is scanned, it is automatically packed within its own custom container.
Setting the Self Pack flag
Click the List menu, and then click Product.
In the Number column, click the product.
The system displays the Edit Product dialog box.
Click the Extended tab.
Click the checkbox to select Self-Pack.
Click Done.
Cloning Containers
Container cloning provides the means to scan a single code to clone the prior closed container, allowing the shipper to process these shipments more efficiently. An in-process, open (partially filled) container cannot be cloned.
Cloning is specific to the shipment (Trans ID) being processed. Handling Units and Containers from the previously processed shipments are not available to be cloned when a new shipment is opened for packing. In other words, for both Scan and Pack Essentials and Scan and Pack Enterprise, the prior container is the immediate previously closed container.
Scan and Pack Enterprise Items Replicated
When using Scan and Pack Enterprise, cloning supports both the handling unit (for example, the pallet) and any sub-containers.
Cloning previously closed containers replicates:
Handling unit with dimensions
Loose items on handling unit
Sub-containers with dimensions
All items packed in sub-containers
Scan and Pack Essentials Items Replicated
When using Scan and Pack Essentials, this feature simply clones the previously closed container.
Cloning the previously closed containers replicates:
Container with dimensions
All items packed in the containers
Cloning Exceptions
Under the following circumstances, cloning containers will not work:
Containers that include serialized items cannot be cloned since the cloning process creates an identical container from the previously closed container.
The shipment being packed does not have at least one closed container.
Container to be cloned has one or more items that exceeds the available items for that order.
The container has been selected, or one or more items have been packed. (Since cloning can only happen as the first step of the scanning/packing a container or handling unit.)
